Nonprofit organisations play such a crucial role in our individual lives and the world at large.

Not only do they bring our attention to a broad spectrum of issues and ills occurring on a local and international level, most importantly, they remind us to be empathetic by appealing to our sense of, well, charity and community.

In the same spirit, here is a list of 20 charities that we are appreciative of:

Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres)
Founded over 40-years ago in 1971 as a brand of humanitarianism, MSF, is a charity – as the name implies – is made up of Doctors who volunteer to help people all around the globe in dire situations (conflicts, epidemics, disasters etc.) through emergency medical aid.

United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)
Our children are the future, and the sole purpose of this organization is to safeguard and guarantee that this future is indeed a reality. Promoting the rights and improving the lives of every child worldwide has been the UNICEF mandate for over 70-years.

Founded in 1905 in the American city of Chicago, the goal of this global organization is to be a place where people with diverse backgrounds and in different occupations exchange ideas, form meaningful lifelong friendships and positively impact their respective communities. They’re still going strong!

International Committee of The Red Cross
The mission of this 150 year old humanitarian network is to alleviate human suffering, protect life and health, and uphold human dignity especially during armed conflicts and other global emergencies.

World Vision
In almost 100 countries, this Christian humanitarian organization is a fierce champion of addressing the triggers of poverty and injustice by working closely with children, families and their communities.

 Habitat for Humanity
Committed to improving the living conditions of the people across the globe, this Christian nonprofit organization founded in 1976 has brought so much relief to people by building simple, decent and affordable to low-income houses for families around the world.

United Way
With a focus on education, income and health, this charity seeks to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good.

Lion’s Club International
This club that is said to be the largest service club organization (it boasts of 46,00 clubs and over 1.4-million members) is geared towards creating better and stronger communities with vigor and veracity.

Room to Read
Tackling the global issues of literacy and gender equality can appear be daunting – not for the members of this organization. This association works in collaboration with communities and local governments across Asia and Africa to make children across the world develop literacy skills, and support girls to complete school.

Human Rights Watch
Established in 1978, this nonprofit and nongovernmental organization is made up of a plethora of professionals (lawyers, journalists, academic etc.) whose task is to safeguard the human rights of people around the world.

A charity with over 4-million members, this organization provides a platform for people who don’t know what cause to join, but are passionate about doing something and giving back. Fantastic idea and work!

This nonprofit organization connects people from different parts of the world to assuage the drastic effects of poverty by letting individuals lend as little as $25. Here’s how it works!

Save the Children
By investing in the childhood of kids in 120 countries worldwide, Save the Children creates avenues that give children a healthy start, a fantastic opportunity to learn and be protected from harm.

Charity Water
A great charity that encourages a $30 donation to give clean water to 1 person in need in developing countries.

TED x Talks
The non profit based organization with the mantra “Ideas worth spreading” has become such a global force to be reckoned with. It is a fantastic platform that is devoted to disseminating ideas (in short powerful talks) from science to business and global issues in more than 100 languages.

World Wide Life
This 50 year old conservation organization currently in 100 countries has one sole mission: protecting the future of nature – every aspect of it – in collaboration with governments, businesses, communities and even individuals.

Despite the controversial association with Tour de France cyclist, Lance Armstrong, this organization has been played a pivotal role towards creating a support system for cancer patients, survivors and their respective community through education and research materials.

A 2002 initiative that is now the first and largest global crowdfunding community that links other charities, contributors and companies in every country around the world. Awfully impressive.

International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW)
Animals need our help too. The IFAW is committed to the respect and protection of animals worldwide by highlighting the responsibility that we as humans have to shield them from suffering and unnecessary exploitation.

The World Bank
This world organization provides financial and technical assistance to developing countries in an effort to end extreme poverty and promote prosperity through income growth.
